What I Wasn't Expecting When I Was Expecting A Grieving Widow Memoir Kristina Smith 9781796229240 Books Reviews

  • I got this book last Friday and read it in an afternoon. I'm a new mom, of a baby born this past August (4 days after Porter's birthday to be exact), so as I was reading, I found myself in her shoes, thinking about what it would have been like to have the excitement of a new baby and new family but also be caring for a husband who was so very sick. We even had experienced an ER run for something minor with my husband during my late months of pregnancy and to think about how different my own story could have been was powerful. Her story will teach you to count your blessings and love your people HARD.

I grew up with Kristina and her siblings. We all went to the same school and her brother and I were in the same class and good friends. For a longtime during our childhood, we even went to the same church. I have followed Kristina & Joe's story from what feels like the beginning, watching their fight and praying alongside our small home town community for their family as they went on this journey. To hear her story in her own words was so eye-opening and heartbreaking but also a deep revelation of how strong she is. I'm proud to say I know her and to be able to support her as she shares her story.
  • First of all, I want to say Kristina Smith is one of the strongest women I have ever known. After reading this book my admiration for Kristina went to infinity and beyond. This book is an incredible read to those who have recently lost a love one to cancer or is in the process of taking care of one battling cancer. Kristina paints a picture and allows you to feel her anguish and cries for help as she battled to save her family unit. She wrote a upfront not holds barred look into being a caregiver to the one you love. I cried almost the entire time as I read this book as my heart broke for Kristina and Porter and Joe's family . If anyone can handle a tradgedy like this and help others deal with similar situations it is Kristina Smith. She takes challenges head on and pours her heart and soul into any project she is passionate about. Porter you have an amazing mother and role model who loves you so much and would move the heavens and earth for you. Joe you have an amazing partner who is doing a wonderful job raising your baby boy. Porter is in good hands with Kristina and you watching out for them in heaven. If you want a book to make you realize that nothing in life should be taken for granted . I urge you to read this book as it will change your perspective on how you view life.
  • My heart ached as I read Kristina and Joe’s battle through colon cancer and all the struggles the diagnosis came with. I think this book is for anyone out there who loves someone affected by cancer. To hear how she felt as a caregiver and how people around her were able to help (without being asked) is what we all need. Too often people won’t ask for help but this book shows you exactly how you have to push your way in, no matter how big or small to make sure they know they aren’t alone. Thank you Kristina for sharing your heart and your ongoing fight to help others.
  • As a more recent young widow to colon cancer I was inclined to order this story. It’s the perfect length Story... as someone who could literally talk forever about the ins and outs of a young life with cancer I appreciate the short sweet length to this book... especially knowing it would be emotional.
I surprisingly went straight to the back. I read it back to front. I’m not saying all should do that, but I as a new widow immediately needed to feel the end... maybe selfishly validate my feelings, not feel so alone. I could swap your names and a few instances and feel like I wrote this book.
Kristina did an impeccable job relaying their story and unintentionally being super relatable.
This story... it may not heal you, it may make you sob your pretty eyes out... but it does bring you peace, and it does for even a few minutes make you feel not so alone.
I’m so proud of Kristina for putting herself out there and giving us this story.
  • I’ve waited a long time to read this book, Nena is my cousin and I watched her posts via Facebook while she was going through her journey. To see it written in a book and all of your emotions spilling over through words made it feel as if I was right there with you. Even though your journey was heart wrenching, You are a survivor. I loved this book!
  • The inspiration you find in this book leaves you knowing if she could get through losing her husband and in a terrible way, I know I can get through anything. Such raw and true emotion. Thank you for helping me heal - your story truly brought healing to my life.
  • Where to even begin? Kristina’s story was powerful, heart wrenching and did justice for the love and life of her late husband, Joe. My tears are Kristina’s, as I cry alongside her for the journey she and her young family endured. A remarkable read would be a grave understatement and no matter your affiliation with cancer, it allows you to grieve with her and puts life into perspective. Incredible!
  • Having known Joe many years it was difficult to watch him go though this. Kristina I can't thank you enough for writing this book and allowing all of us to go through the journey with you. You are an amazing, and strong woman.
